Wood engravings are relief prints, often of great detail and precision. They were the common method for book illustration throughout the nineteenth century and in the twentieth century became a means of personal expression for artists. The course will introduce beginners to all the basic tools and techniques of wood engraving. A set of tools for each student, end-grain practice blocks, a block of lemonwood, Japanese paper and ink will be provided. We will create a final design that is suitable for the size and technique of engraving. Students will work at their own pace. Printing will be by hand-burnishing - a method that can be easily repeated at home.
There will be a 15 materials cost to cover the hire of tools, cost of woodblocks and paper.
