Monday 30th July to Wednesday 1st August

For centuries artists have studied bones, muscles and tendons in order to represent figures in both 2D and 3D form realistically. Through practical exercises, supplemented by a series of mini-lectures, this course provides you with a portfolio of anatomical knowledge that you can take away and use in your own art. We will study the skeleton and look at why surface anatomical landmarks are so important to artists. We will then progress to looking at the main muscle groups of the body, including modelling the muscles of the human face on a take-home skull replica. We will also look at the forces that govern movement and positioning of the body in order to understand how artists may accurately depict body balance and tension.
There will be a materials cost of 15 to cover modelling clay & paper based resources.
Anatomy ANNA PIKE is both an artist and a scientist. She studied Zoology at Leeds University and has a PhD in Mammalian Biomechanics. She has taught animal form and function, biomechanics and anatomy in universities for over 20 years.
